Unit EQ: How do computers make students or employees more productive
LEQ: Why do computers use transistors?
Activating Strategies: have students use the binary converter website to preview the days vocabulary.
Acceleration/Previewing/Vocabulary: Transistor, semiconductor, gate, drain, source, silicon, microprocessor, LED, battery,
Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts:
  1. Show video From JIC on Transistors
  2. Review information in video
have students summarize the video by writing a sentence using the main vocabulary in the video.
    1. source, drain, gate
    2. conductor, insulator, semiconductor
    3. definition of transistor
  3. Handout worksheet.
  4. Handout transistor lab unit.
    Review:
  • do not leave wires attached to transistor

5. Let groups of students work through lab instructions and come to consensus on answers.
Circulate between groups questioning and guiding learning

6. review answers with group at the end of 10 discovery activity.
Summarizing Strategies:
Have students take quiz on Edmodo as ticket out door.

Unit Essential QuestionHow do computers make students or employees more productive? Lesson Essential Question

Why do computers use transistors? I have identified 5 points that I will have students note as they discover and explore transistors.
  1. Very Small
  2. No Moving Parts
  3. Dependable
  4. Calculate and Represent Information
  5. Very Fast

Activating StrategiesStudents will preview the vocabulary by pasting the words which have been coded in binary into a web site that decodes the information and gives them the vocabulary for the day. This ties the previous lesson on digital information with today's lesson on transistors.

Acceleration/Previewing/Key Vocabulary:
  • Transistor, Switch with no moving parts
  • Microprocessor, Millions of transistors on a chip
  • Gate, controls the flow of electrons
  • Drain, where electricity comes out
  • Source, where electricity comes in
  • Binary, a code of zeros and ones
  • Semiconductor, amaterial whose conductivity can change
  • Silicon, what transistors are made from
  • Conductor, lets electrons flow
  • Insulator, prevents electron flow

Teaching Strategies and Distributed Guided Practice/Summarizing Prompts: (All pieces included in the body of the lesson. Examples – collaborative pairs, graphic organizers, distributed guided practice, distributed summarizing activities All resources and handouts used should be attached to this form.)1. On the way in the door students will pick up the handouts, get their folder and check Edmodo.
2. After the Activating Strategy, students we will review what binary is by going over the Previous LEQ: Whatis digital information?
  • Question: What did you learn or demonstrate during the introductory activity. information can be represented by 1's and 0's It takes a lot of 0's and 1's to represent a little info.
4. I will introduce and show the Movie. 4 Min. 5. Review the main topics in the Movie. 5 Min.
  • Questions:
  • What does a conductor do?
  • What does an insulator do?
  • What are the parts of a circuit? path, load, source, switch
  • What is a transistor?
  • What are transistors made from?
  • What are the three parts of a transistor?
6. Each table will receive a transistor lab module. They will follow the document that they picked up on the way in the room.
7. I will circulate among groups and guide their work with questions. 5 Min8. After they are done, I will ask for their answers and discuss it.9. I will have students fill in the "Main Idea Worksheet"
Leading Questions which will help us fill in the worksheet: 5 Min

  • How big is a single transistor? (very small)
  • What was the definition of a transistor again? (no moving parts)
  • Which would break first, the wall light switch or a transistor? (dependable)
  • What is the difference between our transistor and a microprocessor? (millions of transistors)
  • How long did it take to turn the light on when you activated the gate? (instant .. very fast)

10. Review LEQ using the Main Idea Worksheet. Each group of students will have to put their 5 points into a sentence that answers the LEQ.

|| || ||= ||= || ||

Summarizing Strategies: (All students summarize and answer lesson essential question.)Students will work in groups to create a written answer to the lesson essential question. Their papers will be their Ticket Out the Door.
